Reading 20 academic articles without understanding your assignment topic can be frustrating. The problem is not necessarily a lack of research. You may be reading sources without a clear question, focusing on unfamiliar terminology or collecting information without connecting it to your assignment requirements.

The solution is to stop collecting sources temporarily, clarify what the question requires and organise your reading around specific objectives.

Start by breaking the assignment question into smaller parts. Identify the subject, the specific issue and the instruction word.

For example, “Critically evaluate the impact of remote working on employee productivity” requires more than explaining remote working. You must assess its effects, consider supporting and opposing evidence, and reach a reasoned judgement.

Understanding the question before reading further helps you identify which information is relevant.

Some academic articles assume familiarity with theories, concepts and technical terminology.

If you cannot understand an article, read its abstract, introduction and conclusion first. Identify the research question, main findings and key concepts before examining the methodology and detailed analysis.

Look up unfamiliar terms using reliable academic sources. If an article remains difficult, find an introductory review paper or textbook chapter on the same topic.

Reading individual studies is different from understanding a topic as a whole.

Create a simple comparison table with four columns:

After reviewing several sources, look for recurring themes, disagreements and unanswered questions. These patterns can help you understand the broader academic debate.

Group your notes into three to five main themes that directly address the assignment question.

For example, an assignment on employee productivity and remote working might cover productivity benefits, communication challenges, employee wellbeing and differences between industries.

Use these themes to create your headings or paragraph plan. Each section should contribute to answering the question rather than simply summarising articles.

Not necessarily. Before searching for another source, ask whether you understand the assignment question, its key concepts and the evidence you already have.

Additional research is useful when you have identified a specific information gap. Reading more without a clear purpose can make the topic feel even more confusing.

1. What Is My Assignment Question Actually Asking?
