Do not spend hours collecting sources or perfecting the introduction. Your priority is to complete every required section with relevant evidence, clear analysis and accurate referencing.

What Should I Do First When My Assignment Is Due Tomorrow?

Follow these steps to use your remaining time effectively.

1. Read the Assignment Brief (First 30 Minutes)

Identify the word count, submission deadline, assessment criteria and required referencing style. Highlight instruction words such as analyse, evaluate, compare or critically discuss.

Write down exactly what your lecturer expects you to answer.

2. Create a Simple Assignment Outline

Spend approximately 30 minutes planning your structure. For a standard essay, this might include:

Introduction: Introduce the topic and state your main argument.

Main body: Develop your key points using academic evidence and analysis.

Conclusion: Answer the assignment question and summarise your main argument.

References: List the sources you have cited.

Adapt this structure if your assessment requires a report, case study or reflective essay.

3. Find Relevant Academic Sources

Use your university library, Google Scholar and relevant academic databases to identify credible sources. Prioritise material that directly addresses your assignment question.

Avoid collecting dozens of articles. A smaller number of relevant sources used effectively can be more useful than a large collection you cannot analyse.

4. Write the Main Body First

Start with the section you understand best. Build each paragraph around one main point, supporting evidence and your own explanation.

Do not simply summarise sources. Explain how the evidence answers the question and supports your argument.

5. Allocate Time for Every Stage

A practical 24-hour plan could be:

Hours 1–2: Understand the question and plan.

Hours 3–5: Research and organise evidence.

Hours 6–14: Draft the main sections.

Hours 15–17: Complete the introduction and conclusion.

Hours 18–20: Check citations and references.

Hours 21–22: Review structure, grammar and the marking rubric.

Hours 23–24: Final checks and submission buffer.

Adjust the schedule to your assignment’s complexity, and take short breaks to maintain concentration.

What Should I Avoid When Completing an Assignment Overnight?

Avoid copying material without proper citation, inventing references, spending too long on formatting or submitting without checking the assessment requirements. Follow your university’s rules on permitted AI use.

Can I Get a Good Mark If I Finish an Assignment in 24 Hours?

It is possible to produce a solid submission, but the result depends on the task, preparation, research quality and assessment criteria. There is no guaranteed grade. Focus on answering the question accurately rather than making the assignment unnecessarily long.

Need Assignment Support?

Inkmypaper Australia offers academic editing, proofreading and assignment guidance for students in Australia. Drafting the main argument first can make the introduction easier to write.

How many references do I need?
Follow your assessment instructions. There is no universal reference count for every assignment.

Should I submit an incomplete assignment?
Check your university’s late-submission and extension policies before deciding. Submit the strongest complete work you reasonably can.

What is the biggest priority when time is limited?
Answer the exact question, address the marking criteria and support your main points with credible evidence.

If you have only 24 hours to finish a university assignment, start by understanding the question, checking the marking rubric and creating a realistic writing plan.
